Rotary screen (trommel)
Rotary disc screens for removing oversized material.
Rotary disc screens for bulk materials
IFAMAC rotary disc screens classify bulk materials and separate oversized particles before the product continues to the next stage of the process. The coordinated movement of the shafts and discs moves the material forwards, while smaller particles pass through the separation gaps.
Each machine is designed according to the product characteristics, feed particle size, required separation size, operating throughput and plant layout.
The screen can be integrated with feeding systems, conveyors and process equipment to maintain a continuous flow and prevent oversized elements from reaching downstream machinery.
Classification using rotary discs
The material is deposited onto a series of shafts fitted with discs. The rotation of the shafts moves the product along the screening surface and helps distribute it throughout its travel.
Particles that meet the specified dimensions pass through the gaps between the discs. Oversized elements continue moving towards the corresponding discharge point.
This operating principle enables continuous classification and separates coarse and fine materials without interrupting the process feed.
Separation of oversized materials
The disc screen can be used to remove large fragments that could affect the operation of conveyors, feeders or other equipment.
The distance between the discs and the shaft configuration are determined according to the required separation size. The final dimensions must be established by considering the material’s geometry, density, moisture content and behaviour during handling.
Preliminary separation helps maintain more consistent feeding and reduces the risk of blockages caused by elements that are incompatible with downstream equipment.
Applications in bulk material handling
Rotary disc screens can be adapted to biomass classification processes and the handling of other bulk solids. Their specific application depends on the product properties and the size of the fractions to be separated.
Where technically feasible, the system can also be considered for raw materials used in the structural ceramics industry and for other industrial processes that require the removal of oversized elements.
Equipment compatibility must be determined by analysing the characteristics and operating conditions of each material.
Configuration adapted to the product
IFAMAC determines the number of shafts, the arrangement and geometry of the discs, the spacing between elements, the rotational speed and the effective screening area according to the process requirements.
The design also takes into account the required throughput, particle size, abrasiveness, moisture content and potential presence of irregularly shaped materials.
The drive systems and components subject to wear are selected according to the operating conditions and frequency of use of the installation.
Custom design and integration
Each screen is manufactured according to the plant layout and the equipment positioned upstream and downstream of the classification point. The machine can be integrated with feeders, hoppers, belt conveyors and other material-handling systems.
The sensors and control system coordinate the operation of the screen with the rest of the installation to maintain continuous, safe and controlled feeding.
The equipment can be incorporated into both new production lines and existing installations.
